a) Water and Environmental Sanitation – SADI enhances sustainable access to safe and hygienic water for vulnerable communities by targeting:
- Boreholes, dams, pans, shallow wells repair and construction
- Strengthening of water management structures
- Sanitation improvement to curb diseases
b) Education – SADI’s strategy is to equip African youth and elderly with relevant education that will empower them to improve their livelihoods. We address a sustainable and community-based approach to the rehabilitation, renewal and reconstruction of the education sector, giving more emphasize to the establishment and support of youth and women education initiatives. SADI is currently supporting 3 schools in Bakool, lower and Middle juba by paying teachers incentives.
c) Peace building and Protection – As is often the case in conflict-affected communities, much of the impact of the Somali conflict is borne by women and youth. SADI has actively promoted women’s participation in peace building initiatives with the aim of enabling women to articulate and advocate for their socio-economic and political interests. SADI supports women’s organizations and encourages the involvement of women in all levels of peace building at the village, region and national levels and promotes peace and human rights through the following activities:
- Supporting community mechanisms for averting and resolving conflicts through dialogue.
- Building the capacity of women’s organizations to identify mediators and strategize on conflict prevention and resolution.
- Conducting awareness campaigns on peace, democracy and democratic governance.
- Provide protection monitoring network for the displaced and victim of violence.
- Provide trauma management and emergency services to victims of sexual violence.
Since its inception SADI has held seminar for the locals in Garissa, Wajir, Dadaab and Mandera in Kenya and Ceelbarde, Rabdhure ,Xudur and Kismayu District as well as Yeed and Doobley in Somalia on peace building and co-existence of community through dialogue of any problem that arise. SADI is also involved in reporting PMT/PMN in Juba regions as well as mainstreaming its program with protection issues. The organization provides psychosocial and emergency support to victims of Gender Based Violence (GBV) at our health facilities in Kenya and Somalia among other protection related issues.
d) Health & Nutrition – The main strategic priority of SADI in its involvement in health & nutrition sector is to ensure access to quality primary, secondary health care services and avert the malnutrition rate that exist in the continent and in particular Kenya and Somalia. This is achievable through improved availability, access and quality of health care services; improve health infrastructure and human resource capacity. This can be done through:
- Skills training of medical personnel.
- Rehabilitate available health care centers.
- Re-equipment of the health facilities.
- Supply and delivery of drugs.
SADI continues with its interventions both in health and nutrition in Kenya and Somalia to save lives of many children’s and mothers who are faced with the predicament of over two decade without functional government in the case of Somalia to provide the much needed support for social growth.
e) Emergency Response – The African communities mainly those from horn of Africa experience from time to time humanitarian crises that are due to environmental degradation, lack of education and absence of basic social amenities. Due to these and other calamities, which periodically occur,
- SADI responds to this by involvement in:
- Cash-based program
- Water trucking
- Distribution of food and non-food items
f) Food Security and livelihoods – Pastoral African Communities have built a rich cultural base that has sustained their ways of life for centuries. However, years of conflicts like the case in Somalia and civil war have left the pastoral economy depressed and without the ability of coping mechanism. SADI responds by supporting alternative livelihoods, respecting employment dignity and creating engines for economic diversification and prosperity. SADI will target the following objectives in its response to the needs:
- Income generation at household level through enhanced livelihoods
- Improve access to safe water and rangeland through improved pastoral livelihood system.
- Improved local resources by improving governance
- Enhance capacity of local communities, institutions and government for sustainable management of pastoral resources.
g) Institutional capacity building program – SADI Facilitates material, individual and institutional capacity building of local community groups, Community-based Organizations and Local Non-Governmental Organizations engaged in Africa.
The long-term aim of Organizational Development and Capacity Building (CB) is to create strong and sustainable organizations able to mobilize and maintain effective services to the communities in the worldwide.
The various organizations are responsible for their own Organizational development and capacity building. But the Sustainable African Development Initiatives (SADI) however, has a special responsibility to encourage and support this work within organizations. In addition to reinforce strong technical support to network organizations through the African regions, SADI has the additional task to guide, coordinate and enable much needed support towards the needy and poor communities in the horn of Africa.
h) Research and development program – SADI conducts research studies on themes related to Education, Health, Good-Governance, Gender, Institutional Capacity Building and Livelihoods. It will establish Community Information Resource Center that collects stores and disseminates material resources on various themes of community development that benefits individuals, CBOs, local NGOs, and the ASH management and staff in their duties and responsibilities
